Cloud Burst:
An extreme
rainfall volume in a particularly short period of time, that is typically
accompanied by thunderstorms, is referred to as a cloudburst. It
normally occurs when clouds exceed their capacity to sustain the water they
have collected, and they become unable to maintain it, so they release the
water at a single condensed point. A rainfall exceeding 100 mm (approximately 4
inches) in 1 hour over a small locality is called a cloud burst, while the
average rainfall is 5 to 10 mm in 1 hour. Its timespan is quite short, and it
lasts between minutes and several hours. They may bring flash floods,
landslides, infrastructure damage, and damage to lives. Mountainous regions, in particular the Himalayas
(Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan) and places of sudden upthrust of moist
monsoon air are most prone. Simply put, it is as though the water tank
of the sky that suddenly breaks loose over a small area.
Phenomenon:
The phenomenon
of a cloudburst refers to a sudden, extremely heavy downpour of rain over a
very small geographic area in a very short time. It occurs in a number of
steps.
1.
Moisture
Accumulation
The air
with a large proportion of water particles gets heated through convection or
forced through mountains (orographic lift) to elevate quickly.
2.
Cloud
Saturation
The rising
air cools rapidly, and moisture vapor becomes a thick cloud and holds an
exceptionally great deal of water.
3.
Sudden
Release
Unlike the
gradual ejection of rain by the clouds, when the clouds become saturated all
the moisture is expelled forcibly at once, like the bursting of a water tank in
the sky.
Causes of Cloudburst in Pakistan
The
reasons behind the Cloudburst in Pakistan
1.
Himalayan
& Karakoram Mountains
The high
northern lands of Pakistan (Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir) are
extremely tall mountains. As monsoon winds filled with water content carried in
the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal collide with these mountains, they are
then pushed high into the air and cool off, causing heavy and abrupt rains.
2.
Monsoon
System
Between
July and September, monsoon winds come in full force to Pakistan. In cases
where these winds stagnate in a certain valley or a part of the mountains, it leads
to a cloud burst.
3.
Blocked
Valleys
The clouds
are trapped in the narrow valleys such as the Kaghan valley, Swat valley,
Chitral valley, Hunza valley, Neelum valley. Because of the inability to dilute
the rain, they spread it in single, intense rainfall.
4.
Climate
Change
An
escalation of temperatures in Pakistan increases the moisture in the air. Increased
water vapor in the air, puts more danger of severe rainfall occurrences.
5.
Lacking
Dams Capacity:
Our Dams
are old, and their water retention has decreased from 15-30% due to siltation. Tarbela
Dam has lost its 43% water storage capacity due to siltation. Mangla Dam has
lost its 195 storage capacity over the years.
6.
Deforestation:
Forests
can prevent flooding and landslides after an intense rainfall. On a national
level, forest cover declined 18% from 1992 to 2025, falling from 3.78
million hectares to 3.09 million hectares. Countries should have a forest
cover of ~25% (~199,000 km²), but it has ~5% (~38,000 km²), creating
a massive ecological deficit that directly contributes to disasters of
cloudbursts and floods.
Can we predict Cloudburst?
The
cloudbursts are hard to forecast in advance since they are sudden and very
localized. However, scientists combine tools in the following way:
1. Radar & Satellites
Doppler
weather radar is used to measure intense and small-scale rainfall activities.
Satellites monitor the formation of clouds, moisture levels, and wind patterns.
2. High Resolution Forecast Models
Contemporary
models (such as WRF Weather Research & Forecasting- model) predict rain
patterns on smaller scales (in timeframes that are a couple of hours ahead).
3. Ground Observations
An
indication is vivid, dark-colored, towering clouds (cumulonimbus clouds) over
mountains. Excessively hot and very wet weather in anticipating a storm, may
also show signs of possible cloudburst conditions.
4. Warning Systems
The
monsoon and flash flood warnings are given by the Pakistan Meteorological
Department (PMD) in Pakistan but cloudbursts are still hard to accurately
predict.
Precautions
Against Cloudbursts:
They occur
fast so the essential factor is preparedness:
1. Early Warning & Awareness
Stay
informed about PMD alerts and local announcements during the monsoons. Creation
of awareness among communities surrounding mountain areas with indicators of
cloudbursts.
2. Safe Settlement Planning
In the
north, no house should be constructed close to a riverbank or nullah or on a
gradient. Enhance the infrastructure in the valleys that are vulnerable to
floods.
3. Emergency Preparedness
Have an
evacuation plan and first-aid kits as well as drinking water and emergency
supplies. Pre-determine high-ground shelters that will be safe.
4. Travel Precautions
It is
advisable to avoid travelling to the northern hilly landscapes during high
warning periods of the monsoon. Tent never in or near the rivers or streams.
